Charles Hammett Passes Away

We are very sorry to hear that Charles Hammett passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020. Charles was a native of Glendale. His Hammett family was one of the early settlers of the Glendale and Pacolet area. The story of his family can be read at Charles’ Hammett family story.

Charles was one of the earliest contributors to this Glendale website. He wrote an interesting story about playing for the Glendale baseball team for a short while in the 1950s. It can be read at Charles Hammett and Glendale Baseball.

Charles was my second cousin. His mother, Ola McKinney Hammett, was the sister of my grandfather, Andrew Jackson McKinney. Charles was married for 65 years to my longtime friend and also a cousin, Frankie Corn Hammett. Read more at the story of our Corn family.

He started to work at Glendale Mills part-time when he was still in high school. After graduating from Pacolet High School in 1951, he served for a time in the U.S. Navy. After leaving the service, he went to work full-time at the Mill. Much of his time working in the Mill was in the Personnel Office. The late Rev. Clarence Crocker provided over 200 articles for this Glendale website. One of these articles was about the Mill Personnel Office and it has information and a photograph of Charles. Read more at Glendale Mills Personnel Office.

After working at Glendale Mills for several years, Charles took a position with the Noland Company of Spartanburg. He worked at Noland for the rest of his working career until he retired.

The Obituary for Charles is shown below.
